How to Prep Your Skin for a Glowy Makeup Look
If you want your makeup to look smooth, fresh, and radiant, especially in photos, skin prep is key. The good news is that you don’t need a 10-step routine or expensive treatments to get glowing results.
Here’s a simple, no-fuss guide to help you prep your skin before your next makeup appointment, trial, event, or shoot.
1. Cleanse gently (but thoroughly)
Start with clean skin. A gentle cleanser removes sweat, SPF, and leftover skincare without stripping your barrier. Avoid anything harsh or grainy the night before. You want your skin to feel calm, not reactive.
2. Hydrate like you mean it
Makeup sits best on skin that’s hydrated. Use a moisturiser that suits your skin type and absorbs well. It should leave your skin feeling smooth, not greasy or sticky.
If your skin feels tight or dry after moisturising, you may need something a little richer.
3. Skip the extra serums
It’s tempting to layer every serum you own, but too many actives can cause pilling or irritation under makeup. The best prep routine is simple.
Stick to:
A gentle cleanser
Moisturiser
Optional eye cream
Avoid retinol, exfoliating acids, and anything new in the few days before your appointment.
4. Don’t try anything new
This is one of the most common skin prep mistakes. That trendy mask or new serum might sound exciting, but now is not the time. Stick with the products your skin already knows and trusts. That way, there are no surprises on the day.
5. On the day: keep it simple
Before your appointment, arrive with clean skin and no makeup. You can apply moisturiser if needed, but skip foundation, heavy creams, or face oils.
I’ll do a full prep before we begin so your makeup wears beautifully all day.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need flawless skin to look radiant. You just need skin that’s hydrated, balanced, and not overwhelmed with too many products.
If you’re unsure what to use in the lead-up to your event, I’m always happy to chat during your trial or give personalised prep advice based on your skin type.
